65F Bessemer Terrace

Route 65F Bessemer Terrace came into PAT's route structure from the former Burrelli Transit System route, East Pittsburgh - North Braddock. The original Burrelli route can be traced back to 1927 as a jitney route under Burrelli with an extension added in 1936. The route was mix between a feeder bus and a mill bus as the line terminated at the Westinghouse plant in East Pittsburgh.

Garages assigned to the 65F:

Trafford Garage - 03/16/64 - 09/04/65
Homewood Garage - 09/05/65 - 09/07/70

Destination Signs:

Route ran with window cards and destination signs. Signs shown are representative of what you would have seen on the split sign buses.

Routing:

Still trying to determine the exact routing but the route ran from Grandview at Brinton Road in North Braddock (by the Burrelli garage) to Beech Street in East Pittsburgh. As so many routes ran in the area, the map is a maze of lines that we are trying to unravel.

Approximate one way trip time was 10 minutes.

Route Highlights:

  • Started 03/16/64 (Date of Burrelli aquisition)

  • Ended 09/07/70 due to low ridership.

  • The 65F originally ran Monday through Saturday with no Sunday or Holiday service. By 1967 the service was reduced to Monday through Friday service.

  • The route trips had rapidly been reduced by PAT over the years of operation. In April of 1965 the route had over 40 trips a day and by March of 1967 the route had been cut back to 15 trips a day.

Schedules (Known PAT issued schedules are listed):

The 65F had 2 distinct schedule types.

Trafford Garage schedules were folder T-9 and were a plain white, 3 panel fold out schedule. It shared a schedule with the 65C, 65D and 65J

T-9A - 08/30/64
T-9B - 04/11/65

Homewood schedules were folder PH-33 and were initially a plain white, 3 panel fold out schedule sharing a schedule with the 65C, 65D and 65J and later a late 60's era design sharing a schedule with the same routes.

PH-33A - 09/05/65
PH-33B - ?
PH-33C - ?
PH-33D - ?
PH-33E - 03/29/67
PH-33F - ?
PH-33G - ?
PH-33H - ?
PH-33J - 06/21/70

There may have been a folder before T-9A as many early schedules were reprints from former operator schedules.

Route Disposition:

The 65F was discontinued due to low ridership effective 09/08/70. Service was picked up by extending the 68D Wilkinsburg Express and rerouting the 65G Linhart - Braddock.
