49C Washington Road - Whitehall

49D Drake - South Park Road

Route 49C could trace its direct roots back to the PAT 46C Ruthfred Acres route. Created by PAT as a part of the elimination of the 46C route, the 49C provided service to portions of the former 46C service area as well as extending service to those residents to various shopping centers. The 49C creation was an early part of PAT's sorting out of its then still new route structure to eliminate duplicate service and provide new services in the form of local community routes to shopping and other neighborhood attractions while at the same time allowing for direct connections to main trunk routes. The 49C also had the 49D Drake - South Park Road shuttle directly associated with it and were the short trips between Kaufmann's and South Park Shops. These trips were given their own route number. The 49D service was never identified as 49D trips on the schedule except to the point of being shown originating or terminating at South Park Shops. As these two routes were essentially the same route, we're recording their history together.

Garages assigned to the 49C & 49D:

Brentwood Garage - 09/06/66 - 06/28/69
Collier Division - 06/29/69 - 11/20/82

The 49C & 49D also had window cards which were used.

First modified routing (by 1969) - 49C buses now entered Caste Village Shopping Center from Baptist Road, went through the shopping center and left via Grove Road back to Baptist Road and regular route. A 49D short was also routed to the Industrial Blvd. turn around in Bethel Park.

February 20, 1977 - 49C buses now entered the new Hills Department Store Plaza off of Baptist Road.

A one way trip on the regular routing took approximately 40 minutes.

Route Highlights:

  • Started: 09/06/66.

  • Ended: 11/20/82 due to low ridership

  • The 49C /49D ran only Monday through Saturday with no Sunday or holiday service.

  • The 49D was quietly merged into the 49C in the mid 1970's. The 49D was officially dropped from mention on schedule maps by early 1977 and was no longer mentioned on the schedule face page by 1974. Former 49D trips were handled using the 49C sign reading with window cards to indicate a short trip.

  • The 49C went through 4 fare zones under the original fare zone structure.

  • The sign readings varied by series. As time went on, signs for the 49C and 49D had many variations, especially when the auxiliary window sign box was added starting in 1980.

Schedules (Known PAT issued schedules are listed):

The 49C & 49D had 5 distinct schedule types.

Brentwood schedules for the 49C/ 49D carried the folder B-20. The first being an all white, 2 panel fold out schedule and the second being a 2 panel fold out schedule in the late 60's era styling.

Collier schedules initially included the 49C /49D in the 41C Cedar Blvd schedules under folder C-10. These were 3 panel fold out schedules in both the late 60's and MOD era design. By 1977, the schedule design was in the MOD era South Busway design and now a 4 panel fold out schedule. Late 1980 saw the 49C getting its own schedule again under folder C-24 and was a MOD era 2 panel fold out schedule.
