44E Inglewood

Route 44E came into PAT's route structure in 1964 from former Pittsburgh Railways Company feeder bus route 46 Inglewood. The route itself can be traced back as far as December 18, 1933 when PRCo instituted the feeder route as its route 104 Inglewood. It was renumbered to 46 in the 1950's. Its purpose was to serve the Inglewood Drive area as a feeder route to the streetcars at Clearview Loop in Mt. Lebanon.

Garages assigned to the 44E:

Manchester Garage - 03/01/64 - 03/30/64
Bridgeville Garage - 03/31/64 - 06/28/69
Collier Division - 06/29/69 - 02/19/83

Destination Signs:

Route ran with window cards and destination signs.

The destination signs were never on split sign buses and the route made it into the electronic sign era but didn't last very long after the 1983 Neoplans started to arrive.

Routing:

Regular routing from Clearview Loop - Clearview Loop via Washington Road, Crescent to Inglewood, Seneca, Purchase, Markham, Altadena, Inglewood, Crescent, Woodhaven, Longuevue, Washington Road, Sunnyhill, Mohawk to Ordale, Washington Road to Terrace, Pueblo, Mohican, Navahoe to Terrace.

Return trip from Terrace - Terrace to Washington Road to Clearview Loop.

This route remained relatively constant over PAT's years of operations with the Terrace section becoming a limited service portion in 1978. A limited service short cut was added in 1978 also going direct from Washington Road onto Inglewood instead of to Crescent.

A one way trip on the regular routing took approximately 22 minutes with the return trip to Clearview Loop taking approximately 7 minutes.

Route Highlights:

  • Started: 03/01/64 (Date of PAT's acquisition of PRCo. Actual redesignation of the route from 46 to 44E is not currently know but occurred in 1964)

  • Ended: 02/19/83 due to low ridership

  • The 44E originally ran only Monday through Saturday with no Sunday or holiday service. and effective 02/20/77, Saturday service was eliminated.

  • The layover point of the route was Clearview Loop.

  • The Terrace section of the route was also served by the 37A Mt. Lebanon via McFarland Road.
