44C Duquesne Heights

Route 44C came into PAT's route structure from the former Pittsburgh Railways Company (PRCo) bus route number 41 Mt. Washington. The 41 was the 222 Duquesne Heights feeder prior to PRCo renumbering the route and started on 12/20/48. The purpose was to serve as a feeder for the 40 Mt. Washington streetcar line.

Garages assigned to the 44C:

Manchester Garage - 03/01/64 - 09/03/66

Destination Signs:

Route ran with both window cards and destination signs. Above is a representation of what you may have seen on the 1800 and other old look coaches.

Routing:

Outbound Routing - Wyoming at Grandview Avenue via Grandview Avenue, Maple Terrace, Virginia Avenue, Ulysses Street, Grandview Avenue, Bigham Street, Virginia Avenue, Olympia Street, Grandview Avenue, Cohasset Street, Meridan Street, Virginia Avenue, Oneida Street to Grandview.

Inbound Routing - Oneida Street at Grandview Avenue via Grandview Avenue, Olympia Street, Virginia Avenue, Wyoming Street to Grandview Avenue.

Approximate one way trip time was 12 minutes.

Route Highlights:

  • Started: 03/01/64 (PAT acquisition date of PRCo)

  • Ended: 09/03/66

  • The 44C ran only Monday through Friday with no weekend or holiday service.

  • At least one schedule mis-identified the 44C as the 34C.

  • 30 and 35 foot buses were the equipment used on the line due to the narrow streets in the Mt. Washington area.

Schedules (Known PAT issued schedules are listed):

The 44C had 1 distinct styles of schedules issued during its existance.

The schedules from the Manchester Garage were folder PM-9 and were combined with the 34B and 34C schedule in the 2 panel paper fold out schedule.

PM-9A - ?
PM-9B - 08/01/65
PM-9B - 08/01/65

There may have been a few PAT schedules issued prior to PM-9A as the very early schedules tended not to have folder numbers and/or were reissued former operator schedules. One was issued on 06/22/64 without a folder number.

Route Disposition:

The 44C was discontinued on 09/04/66 when the 40 Mt. Washington trolley line was discontinued. The 44C service area was picked up by the new 41E Mt. Washington bus route and the extention of the 34C Warrington - Grandview.
