24B   McKees Rocks Bridge

Route 24B came into PAT's route structure from the former Pittsburgh Railways Company (PRCo) bus route number 23 with the same name. Prior to that the route could trace its roots back to the 102 McKees Rocks feeder route which started sometime between October 1938 and December 1944. Its main purpose was to handle students as well as workers who needed to cross the bridge and ran only during the AM and PM rush as well as mid-afternoon for school trips.

Garages assigned to the 24B:

Manchester Garage - 03/01/64 - 03/30/68
Ross Division - 03/31/68 - ??/??/72

Destination Signs:

Route ran with window cards. Very early PAT service in 1964 would utilize the old PRCo 23 McKees Rocks Bridge reading if the bus assigned to the route had the reading in it. There was an order of roll signs in 1977 that did include this abandoned route but it was not used by that point.

Routing:

Routing from Brighton Road at Davis to McClure, Termon, Termon Avenue Ramp, McKees Rocks Bridge, Island, Chartiers, May (Yunkers on some schedules), Thompson, St. Johns, Chartiers.

Routing from St. Johns at Chartiers to Island, McKees Rocks Bridge, Termon Avenue Ramp, Termon, Brighton to Davis.

A one way trip on the regular routing took approximately 12 minutes.

Connections:

16A - Aliquippa
16B - Brighton
16C - Bellevue - West View
19B - Manchester - Evergreen
21A - Coraopolis
21B - Kenmawr
21C - West Park
21D - West Park - Kenmawr
24A - Broadhead to Shoenville

Route Highlights:

  • Started 03/01/64 (PAT acquisition date of PRCo - Actual route redesignation from PRCo 23 to PAT 24A is not currently known).

  • Ended ??/??/72 due to low ridership. Currently researching for exact end date of route.

  • The 24B ran only Monday through Friday with no weekend or holiday service

Schedules (Known PAT issued schedules issued are listed):

The 24B had 2 distinct styles of schedules.

The schedules from the Manchester Garage were folder PM-5 and were combined with the 21C and 24A schedules in a 3 panel paper fold out schedule. Very early Manchester schedules were listed as folder RM and were switched to PM by early 1965.

RM-5A - ?
RM-5B - 01/10/65
PM-5C - ?

The schedules from Ross Division were folder R-12 and were combined with the 19A, 19B and 24A schedules in a 2 panel paper fold out schedule.

There may have been a few PAT schedules issued prior to RM-5A as the very early schedules tended not to have folder numbers and/or were reissued former operator schedules.

Route Disposition:

The 24B was discontinued on towards the end of 1972 due to lack of patronage. Replacement service was from 21B, C, D and 24A trips going to and from Ross Garage. Schedules issued after the discontinuance of the 24B simply showed McKees Rocks Bridge Service on the schedules.
