60W Liberty - Lincoln - Elizabeth Twp.

The original 60W route came into PAT's route structure in order to provide service between McKeesport and the Central Highlands area of Elizabeth Township. This was the first designation of the 60W route in the PAT route structure with the route being reincarnated again in the mid 1980's under a different name and a more direct routing to the same area.

Garages assigned to the 60W:

West Mifflin Division - 07/02/73 - 11/06/76

Destination Signs:

Route ran with window cards and destination signs. Above is an example of the 1200 Flxible sign. AM Generals also had the original 60W sign but the sign wasn't used on the AMG's as the route was discontinued at that point.

Routing:

From McKeesport - Fifth Avenue at Sinclair via Sinclair, Shaw, Walnut, 6th, Market, 15th Street Bridge, Liberty Way, Port Vue Road, Port Vue - Lovedale Road, Finney, Pierce, PA Route 48, Rock Run, Parkwyn, Donna, Howell, Fallen Timber, Simpson-Howell to McLay.

To McKeesport - Simpson-Howell at McLay via McLay, Circle, Timothy, Simpson-Howell, PA Route 48, Pierce Road, Finney Road, Port Vue - Lovedale Road, Port Vue Road, Liberty Way, Glenn Avenue, Glenn Avenue Extension, Liberty Way, 15th Street Bridge, Market, Fifth Avenue to Sinclair.

A one way trip on the regular routing took approximately 35 minutes.

Route Highlights:

  • Started: 07/02/73 as a 60 day trial route.

  • Ended: 11/06/76 (based on available schedule information).

  • The 60W ran only Monday through Friday with no weekend or holiday service.

  • The route was an early attempt at serving Elizabeth Township which was largely under-served.

  • The 60W was closely related to and for the most part was an offshoot of the 60U. 60U schedules did not list the 60W when it was in existence however.

Schedules (Known PAT issued schedules are listed):

The 60W during this era appeared to run from schedule cards with no folder number. At this point we have been unable to locate the schedule in any PAT schedule besides the service announcement cards that include the running times.

Two known schedule cards are currently known to have existed for the original 60W.

07/02/73 - Introducing the service.
09/03/74 - Announcing time adjustments to allow for an earlier arrival in McKeesport.

There may have been additional schedule cards and possibly actual schedules. We are currently researching this.

Route Disposition:

The 60W was discontinued on 11/06/76 and merged into the 60U Liberty - Lincoln - Elizabeth Township main route. The 60W was basically an offshoot of this route which served a portion of Elizabeth Township not served by the 60U so the merger was done to consolidate services. The 60W was reincarnated in 1984 after it was split back off of the 60U.

The history of the reincarnation the 60W route, known as the 60W Central Highlands, will be covered in a separate route history.
