16F Charles Street

Route 16F came into PAT's route structure from former Pittsburgh Railways Company (PRCo) bus route 7 Charles Street on March 1, 1964. Prior to the PRCo bus route 7, the route can be traced to the 7 Charles Street streetcar line. The switch from streetcar to bus occurred on September 1, 1961. The 16F route number was reincarnated in the 70's and applied to the former 19C City View route and the Charles Street designation was reincarnated in the 80's as the 16G Charles Street.

Garages assigned to the 16F:

Manchester Garage - 03/01/64 - 10/22/66

Destination Signs:

Route ran with window cards and destination signs.

The 1800 series coaches had this reading. We're still researching to see if it appeared on the split sign buses.

The changes on the routing occurred due to Allegheny Center construction as well as the City of Pittsburgh making some streets one way.

A one way trip on the regular routing took approximately 15 minutes.

Route Highlights:

  • Started: 03/01/64 (PAT's acquistion of PRCo - actual redesignation from route 7 to 16F is not currently known).

  • Ended: 10/22/66 due to low ridership.

  • The 16F ran only Monday through Friday with no weekend or holiday service.

  • The 16F outer terminus was the transfer point for the 19C City View feeder bus. This was a hold over from PRCo trolley operations.

Schedules (Known PAT issued schedules are listed):

The 16F had 1 distinct schedule style issued.

The schedules from the Manchester Garage were folder PM-4 and were in the early 60's style of plain white and of the fold out style being combined with the 6B Spring Hill, 6C Spring Garden, 19C City View and the 11E Fineview. Schedules were inconsistant in height and the number of panels over each issue.

PM-4A - ?
PM-4B - 11/22/64
PM-4C - 01/10/65
PM-4D - 06/27/65 - corrected to 07/17/65
PM-4E - 02/27/66
PM-4F - 05/01/66 - 11E Fineview added to schedule
PM-4G - 06/26/66
PM-4H - ?

There may have been schedules issued prior to PM-4A and were typically reprinted former operator schedules.

Route Disposition:

The 16F was discontinued with the 19C being extended further into the North Side and making transfer connections with the 11E at Perrysville and Charles as well as routes that served Allegheny Center.
